ALEC and the White House (Reagan and Bush I & II)

(If you don't know what ALEC is - please see the links at the end of this diary.)

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) admits that 1/3 of state legislators belong to their organization.

ALEC reported in 2005 that 89 ALEC Alumni were in the US Congress or 16.6% of the US Congress (It is my belief that the actual number of ALEC’s Alumni are under-reported by ALEC, with the number of ALEC Alumni serving in the Congress being well over 100.  (If you include Federal appointees – such as Tom Vilsack, currently  or historically Donald Rumsfeld, the number could become very frightening.)

But, have you ever wonder how close ALEC gets to the White House?

Well - here's a little history on ALEC and the White House.

The following are excerpts from the ALEC's 25th Annual Meeting Commemorative Program (1998) where they make the following statements:
So well received were the policies which ALEC proffered in the late 1970s, that eleven days after his inauguration, President Ronald Reagan invited a bipartisan delegation of 35 ALEC members to meet with him at the White House to help set the agenda for his New Federalism initiatives .

So then the question begs to be asked - was that a one time meeting?
During briefings in May and December of 1981, hundreds of ALEC legislators discussed policy changes directly with the President

No.

Did it stop with just those two months of "discussions ... directly with the President"?
As a result of the interaction that ALEC members had with Reagan Administration officials, ALEC established seven Cabinet Task Forces to work directly with the administration
But that didn't mean they had a close relationship - correct?

Finally, in 1986, it was decided that - as a result of the constant interaction with the Reagan Administration, the successes of policies it proposed, and the generally high regard with which its ideas were met-ALEC should form formal internal Task Forces to develop policy covering virtually every aspect of government

And surely that was the end of it - right?
...  hundreds of ALEC legislators discussed policy changes directly with the President [Reagan] and his top policy advisors-a practice that would continue throughout the twelve years of the Reagan and Bush presidencies.

Yep - twelve years, 1981 - 1993.

Explains why they gave the prestigious "Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award" to Reagan in 1990 and  George H. Bush in 1993.

And then, of course - you have this...
President Bush is welcomed by ALEC members at the opening session of the 1992 Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. Joining the President at the head table were Ambassador Holly Coorst Senator Ray Powers (CO), Mr. Allen Auger of Coors Brewing Company, Incoming National Chairman Senator William J. Raggio (NV), ALEC Executive Director Samuel A. Bruneffi, …  Major speakers included: President George Bush; Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan; Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander; Secretary of Transportation Andrew Card; Secretary of Health and Human Service Louis Sullivan; Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Jack Kemp, Deputy Attorney General George Terwilleger

Thank god Clinton was in office from 1993 - January, 2001.

But once Reagan and George 41 were out of office it stopped there, didn't it?
Well maybe, depending how you define the concept of "constant interaction" and remember, by then ALEC was getting a little more guarded about their operations.

But then I think it probably started up all over again.

The 2001 [States and Nation Policy] Summit began with a White House briefing from President George Bush and some of his top aides, including Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge (a former Pennsylvania governor),White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card and White House Intergovernmental Affairs Director Ruben Barrales. President Bush briefed ALEC members on the need for more coordination between federal, state and local governments in the fight against terrorism. (ALEC 2001 Annual Report)

And then there's this...
The 2002 [States and Nation Policy] Summit attracted more than 300 state legislators from 43 states.
One of the key highlights of the meeting was a briefing by President George W. Bush on homeland security and the situation in Iraq. During the briefing at the White House, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige and Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge joined President Bush in offering remarks. (ALEC 2002 Annual Report)

And this from the annual meeting in 2003
Vice President Richard B. Cheney
Thank you very much. I appreciate that warm welcome, and I’m especially honored to be this year’s award winner of the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award. It means a great deal. I’ve got enormous respect for ALEC and for what the organization stands for.

I see many friends from across America out there tonight, and it’s good to bring you greetings from President George W. Bush. He sends you his very best.   ...   President Bush and I appreciate the good work you do, and we value your advice, and we appreciate your support.

It was pretty easy to see why Reagan got the Jefferson - but I wonder why Cheney got the award?  (Would it have anything to do with his “infamous” Energy “Task Force” - the timing is about right?) Maybe "W" couldn't pronounce Jeffersonian or federalism  - there's probably a wide array of options for "why not W" I guess.

2004 was an election year - so I don't think ALEC was on the agenda for anyone at the White House.

And then there is this
President George W. Bush Addresses ALEC's 32nd Annual Meeting (2005 Annual Meeting in Grapevine, Texas)
while promoting an aggressive domestic agenda that includes changes to Social Security, immigration and the tax code. "I hope Congress gets a good rest because they got a lot of work to do when they get back," Mr. Bush told the members of the American Legislative Exchange Council convened for their 32nd Annual Meeting.

2006... George W - sent a video message to the annual meeting.

And then this
Among the many highlights of ALEC’s 34th Annual Meeting (2007) in Philadelphia this summer was a surprise visit by President George W. Bush. The president was warmly welcomed by ALEC members Thursday morning, who reserved their loudest applause for his promise to veto any tax increase Congress sends him.  (Inside ALEC 2007 - George W was the cover shot)

And that would be an additional 8 years of linkage to the White House.

Nice marketing pitch, wonder why it isn't in their materials? "You too, a legislator from Hobunk America, can have direct access to the President of the United States through your membership in ALEC."  Maybe that's part of the "secretive" stuff.

Is their close relationship with the White House done?  Probably not, if you ponder carefully to the words of Jack Kemp from 1983.

“I have been closely associated with ALEC’s work for many years, and can attest to its importance as a valuable source of information for lawmakers on both the
state and national level.  …”  (Jack Kemp (NY) 1983 Annual Report)

Conservatives cannot cherish tradition because it is tradition, but because it is true! The values that we hold are true for all people and for all time. ”  He inspired the audience with his assertion that, “In the final analysis we're going to win. There is no holding us back—history is on our side.
(on the Jack Kemp (NY)  Keynote Speech, ALEC 1983 Annual Meeting)

Besides the shock and awe some of you may be feeling - there is a moral to this story.

Voting has consequences
and one of the consequences of a Republican president
is ALEC in the White House.

Someone Needs to Tell the World - ALEC is NOT the USA!

I saw this snip on the front page of Think Progress just now:
House Republicans will introduce legislation today that would restrict the nation’s U.N. contributions “to only the specific purposes outlined by Congress” and would withhold any funding for a U.N. agency that “helps Palestinian refugees.” Noting that the U.N. has never promoted American interests more, a Better World Initiative said the bill would “severely erode America’s leadership role” and “undermine our nation’s security.”

And it made me think of this: piece from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)
The Case for Expanding ALEC’s Role in International Affairs

"The common conservative mistrust of the United Nations is well-known. While there are many reservations one may have regarding the organization, two of the strongest and most often-cited are these: First, at its core, the UN exists fundamentally to forfeit the sovereignty of nations in favor of the consensus of the international community. The notion of handing U.S. sovereignty off to any other power is anathema to many of us, and rightly so. Second, the UN has demonstrated that it is often unable to efficiently implement the powers and regulations it has pursued. Even if one is concerned with the purpose of the organization, there is cause for even greater concern regarding whether the UN is capable of carrying out that purpose well and wisely.

This is why ALEC aims to apply for membership as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in consultative status with the UN. If successful, our voice would be added to a chorus of over 3,000 organizations, including the AARP, the American Psychological Association, Lawyers Without Borders, and the Salvation Army. Achieving consultative status with the UN would give ALEC a new and unique edge in its mission to defend itself and its clients against governments, policies, and global trends that continue to challenge our individual liberties and free market interests."

We all know or should know that ALEC has expanded it's reach beyond the United States having infiltrated many countries of the world.  They are currently fighting labeling of cigarettes in Australia in an effort to maintain revenues for their corporate sector members.

ALEC Acknowledges the following people as ALEC International Legislators
MEP Richard Ashworth, United Kingdom
Senator Cory Bernardi, Australia
MEP Adam Bielan, Poland
MEP Martin Callanan, United Kingdom
MEP Philip Claeys, Belgium
MP David Darchiashvili, Georgia
MEP Niranjan Deva, United Kingdom
MEP Cristofer Fjellner, Sweden
Dr. Liam Fox, United Kingdom
MEP Daniel Hannan, United Kingdom
MP Chris Heaton-Harris, United Kingdom
MEP Roger Helmer, United Kingdom
Assemblywoman Ayesha Javed, Pakistan
MEP Syed Kamall, United Kingdom
MEP Michal Kaminski, Poland
MEP Miroslaw Piotrowski, Poland
MEP Ivo Strejcek, Czech Republic
MEP Robert Sturdy, United Kingdom
MEP Konrad Szymanski, Poland

And there's this incredibly stupid legislator who made this comment at an ALEC function in Europe:
“We [Czech Republic] know how much we owe to America for being free. We are in the battlefield in the war on terror. We are standing firmly next to our American allies and we – faithful to our unprecedented history – care for being serious, solid and trustworthy allies.”
IVO STREJCEK MEP (2006)

He evidently thinks that his association with ALEC is somehow messed up with their freedom.  Someone needs to tell this guy - that the longer he associates with ALEC - the less freedom they will have and their "ally" is not ALEC - it is THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

When is this going to stop?  When are we finally going to say "Enough is Enough" around the world and stop this takeover of the world by free-market nut jobs that were pulled from the brink of bankruptcy by the Koch brothers, so that the ALEC could continue it's rule of terror around the world.

ALEC must be destroyed and the main way to destroy it is to remove all legislators - worldwide from the grips of this destructive, facist organization.  Around the world we MUST work to make sure that all people associated to ALEC are NOT re-elected in every town, every country - every nation.  ALEC must be destroyed.  If we do not - every country in the world will be ruled by the "Camera dei Fasci e delle Corporazioni".

"If classical liberalism spells individualism,
Fascism spells government.
But not a government of, by, and for We The People -
instead, it would be a government of, by, and for the most powerful corporate interests in the nation."
"The Doctrine of Fascism" - Benito Mussolini, 1923

Michigan Republicans Will Rot in Hell...

for eternity --------- if this is indeed true

Last week, the campaign to recall Republican Governor Rick Snyder in Michigan, Fire Rick Snyder, passed 50% of the 806,522 signatures required to trigger a new election. In retrospect, maybe Snyder's latest "jobs plan" should have involved more than kicking 30,000 children off of food assistance.

Panicked by Snyder's unpopularity, Michigan Republicans are making robocalls claiming the recall petitions are a form of identity theft. While that's pretty bad, just imagine their hysteria when we gather 100% of the signatures required to force a recall election.
I do believe in a vengeful god.

David Ober - Indiana - Gets an ALEC Endorsement

Either MR. Ober is the dumbest person in Indiana  OR he is already a member of the American Legislative Exchange council - ALEC.

On Ober's campaign site he includes a full page endorsement - with picture - from Mitch Harper.  On that page in the last paragraph - as an explanation of Mr Harper's qualifications to give such a hardy endorsement to Mr. Ober is the following statement:
Mitch also served as the Indiana State Chairman for the American Legislative Exchange Council. Elected at age 22, he was the youngest member of the Indiana House of Representatives.
And then you have this from Ober's campaign site:
State Sens. Jim Banks, R-Columbia City, and Carlin Yoder, R-Middlebury, announced last week they will endorse David Ober for the 82nd District state representative seat.
Banks and Yoder are both confirmed as having ALEC affiliations!

Harper, Banks and Yoder are all endorsing someone they like - someone who they share values with and those values include an ALEC philosophy of free-market economy and pro-corporate legislation in every state legislature across the United States.  ALEC's philosophy is corporatist and anti representation of, by and for the people.

MR. Ober is the either the dumbest person in Indiana  OR he is already an ALEC member.
Dumb, ...................................dumb, dumb, dumb or ALEC, ALEC, ALEC

If you MUST vote Republican (and the reasoning behind doing that is something I truly cannot understand at all)  in order to save our democracy from ALEC  - you must be willing to ask Mr Ober to sign a pledge stating

That neither they nor any member of their staff currently belong to and will ever belong to ALEC.
  • That at no time during their time as a public servant will they attend any meeting held by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
  • And at no time during their time as a public servant will they introduce, author or co-author any legislation produced by ALEC.
  • And as a public servant they will represent the people and will hold strong against any legislation introduced that is ALEC “model legislation” - legislation which favors corporations that belong to ALEC and has no redeeming properties in its entirety for the public and are detrimental to the citizens of Tennessee.
If Ober is a patriotic American, Republican candidate - if he is a true public servant - who believes with every bone in his body - that representation of, by and for the people is the American way he will sign the pledge and kick ALEC out of the legislative arena in Indiana.

To everyone else who doesn't have a belief that they have to vote for a Republican - please support your Democractic candidate so they will defeat Mr Ober - boots to the ground - PLEASE!

A vote for an ALEC leaning candidate -
is a vote for greater pro-corporate representation and legislation  in your state,
is a vote against small and medium size business in your state,
is a vote against representative government for the people, and

Possibly - the Biggest ALEC Lie EVER

From about 1998 - An actual ALEC quote

"ALEC is bringing to America a chance to recapture the soul of America ... to allow every single American man or woman, irrespective of their ethnic background- irrespective of their color- a chance to be part of the greatest democracy- the greatest freedom- the greatest system on the face of the earth."
-Jack Kemp

SHOULD BE
"ALEC is bringing to America a chance to recapture and enhance  the wealth of CORPORATE America ... to allow every single American man or woman, irrespective of their ethnic background - irrespective of their color - a chance to be a victim of the biggest screw job in the world - the destruction of the greatest democracy in the world - the absolute freedom of every ALEC legislator to completely destroy the concept of representative government of, by, and for the people - the greatest corporate run government system on the face of the earth."

ALEC ALUMNI Pataki - White House - NEVER!

Why he must never be considered for the White House - NEVER!!

From the ALEC 2000 Annual REport

Well over 100 ALEC members hold senior
leadership positions in their state legislatures, while
hundreds more hold important committee leadership
positions. Seven sitting Governors, including Frank
Keating (Okla.), John Engler (Mich.), and George
Pataki (N.Y.), and several former governors, including
Jim Edgar (Ill.) and Tommy Thompson (Wisc.), are
alumni of ALEC.

More than 80 Members of Congress are former
ALEC members. Included among this distinguished
list in the House are Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.),
House Majority Whip Tom Delay (R-Texas) and
International Relations Committee Chairman Henry
Hyde (R-Ill.). Assistant Majority Leader Don Nickles
(R-Okla.) is ALEC’s highest-ranking alumnus in the
Senate, which includes U.S. Senators Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.),
Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), and George Allen (R-Va.).

Need MN State Fair Volunteers

This is just one of many action items that I have done in relation to trying to educate people about ALEC.

This Saturday - September 3 until noon, max.
I am looking for three volunteers to help at the Minnesota State Fair.
We'll meet at 7am for breakfast - my treat, and so I can give you your stuff and we can talk a bit.

You have to know about ALEC - people who do not have a sound understanding of ALEC need not leave their contact info.  (Leave me a comment - with your email/phone contact - I won't publish the comment - so no one will see it, 'cept me.)

What will you do?
Just walk around the fairground, enjoying the fair -  wearing a t-shirt that says.
Ask Me About
   A.L.E.C.
NO hawking, No selling, NO approaching  people - just walking around, enjoying the fair - waiting for someone to stop you and ask you a question about ALEC.

You need to be very friendly and conversational and dressed conservatively - we're not trying to scare people - we are trying to "educate" them.  This has to be a friendly conversation.

When someone stops you, you will thank them for stopping you, ask them how they know about ALEC; how did they find out about ALEC, if they have any questions about ALEC (you HAVE to be able to answer questions about ALEC)  and finally, would they like some materials about ALEC.  This will weed out Repugs who would possibly take all our materials.  This will also weed out people who do not need the materials, because they already know about ALEC - you may run into these type of people who know about ALEC and just want to talk about it.  This will also weed out people who actually have no interest in ALEC - but are snoopy and don't really need or want the materials.

If they want the materials you will be giving them a handout that will include a copy of a report about ALEC (either the pfaw or cjc report - if you do not know what those are do not respond)  and also a list of Minnesota ALEC members as the first page.

I'll supply the t-shirt (this will be my first attempt at lettering t-shirts)
I'll supply a limited amount of handouts per person
I'll give you $10 for lunch

You have to pay to get into the fair.  You can bring a friend or family member (no litle kids please) to enjoy the fair with - as long as they understand that the ALEC purpose is why you are there - if someone stops you, you will talk with them, and it may take awhile.

This may seem prescriptive - but it's my money I am spending and I want to make sure it is put to good use.

We may have a total of ten people ask during the day - we may have none - since most people don't know about ALEC.  It's all about exposure and my motto is if one more person finds out about ALEC - that's more than we had when we started the day.

Wyoming - Where Men are Men and ALEC is Secret

Wyoming
Secrecy is another red flag.
Illoway, a Cheyenne Republican, refused a Star-Tribune request for a list of
Wyoming legislators who are ALEC members.
The next question is obvious: What do those legislators have to hide?
(March 2006 – looks like nothing has changed.)

Below you will find a list of people who have an association with to have been linked with ALEC – many are even verifiable Wyoming ALEC members.

Each person on the list has been compiled and cited using the web and you can also find the proof by researching through ALEC documents, reports and magazines, or examining, the Wyoming Blue Book or other webpage bios or article.

A longer list can be found here – because they have access to leaked documents that I don’t have.  Since I don’t have these documents in my files – I won’t list those people in my blog.

So what – what if people had a list – what does that accomplish?
What would happen if people had a list - what will it accomplish?
Does it really hurt ALEC if a list were available or would ALEC just go on – business as usual?
How would this information be used in a constructive way?

What is next – we HAVE TO REMOVE all ALEC members from state and federal government.  It is our role to make sure that they don’t get re-elected.  Now is the time for “boots to the ground” to use the information we have compiled on ALEC members and ALEC “model legislation” to prove to others that ALEC members MUST be removed from public service at any and all levels.

ALEC just completed their four day conference where ALEC Corporations told your legislators what legislation they wanted to have passed and what legislation they did not want to have passed.

ALEC members are not serving the public – they are serving the ALEC corporations.  It does not matter how ALEC or their members spin this story over the next couple months it is important for you – to remember and to talk about the following fact:

When was the last time YOU got to sit with your legislator for two or three days and tell your legislator what YOUR needs are and help your legislator write legislation that benefited YOU?

Your ALEC legislator does this multiple times a year with corporations – so when push come to shove – it is evident who your legislator is representing – the ALEC corporations.

Past members are important – because they may come up for a state or federal appointment.

Campaign reports – report campaigns – so someone may be on the list that did not win  - but you can bet your boots they will try again.

ALEC members and those affiliated with ALEC in any manner
MUST NOT BE RE-ELECTED.

Without state and federal legislators ALEC will cease to exist and it will implode.

Utah - ALEC Leads to the Telestial Kingdom

Utah
The 13th Article of the Mormon Faith begins with:
“We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous,
and in doing good to all men;”
How do these people sleep at night if they belong to ALEC and are also Mormons –
cause that is not what ALEC believes in!
You can't be a servant before two gods and get into the Celestial Kingdom.
Are you really willing to chance life everafter in the Terrestrial Kingdom or Telestial Kingdom?

Each person on the list has been compiled and cited using the web and you can also find the proof by researching through ALEC documents, reports and magazines, or examining the financial documentation of the Utah campaign finance board reporting webpage, or state bios, or other webpage bios or article.
