My 2012 ALEC Wish List

I've been thinking about this all day and there are things that I would like to see for the New Year in relation to the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

1. An investigation by every State Attorney General and the Department of Justice into ALEC corporate members and state contracts that have been issued.  Linking the ALEC legislator to the ALEC corporate sector member to the contract is not rocket science.  We don't need more laws - we just need the ones we currently have enforced.

2.  Independent and Democratic legislators at the state and Federal level going to ALEC meetings for the sole purpose of reporting back to liberal media what is discussed at the ALEC meeting sessions.

3.  Montana - a state that has the strongest open meeting laws in the nation -  Independent and Democratic legislators attending ALEC meetings and demanding openness of the proceedings of all sessions, all taskforces.

4.  Every ALEC state legislator and ALEC ALUMNI in Congress who is up for re-election is defeated in 2012.

5.  Every candidate - entering any race,  is vetted openly for their affiliation with ALEC.

6.  Every blogger, tweeter, facebooker and journalist includes the phrase "ALEC Member" when reporting on any legislator who belongs to ALEC.

7.  Every Occupier is educated about ALEC and how the actions of ALEC have led to every situation the Occupier is protesting.

8. That bloggers and journalists focus on destroying ALEC - rather than winning a Pulitzer prize.

9.  That every article where an ALEC member is pushing ALEC philosophy is challenged in the comments - stating that the legislator is an ALEC member and why that is dangerous.

10.  That every citizen in the United States becomes aware of how dangerous ALEC is and that it must be stopped before it destroys our democracy and our country.

11.  Legislation to outlaw state or federal reimbursement of any kind - money, time, or resources - related to ALEC membership in the United States.  I don't want to see any more admins at the state level being given the ALEC volunteer of the year award.  I don't want anymore legislators going to ALEC meetings on state time.  I don't want anymore resources being spent by the state or federal government to support the work of ALEC.

12.  I want the IRS to step up to the damn plate and take away ALEC's 501c3 status.

13.  I want every Independent and Democratic legislators to call out ALEC lobbying as lobbying when ALEC staff or hired lobbyists come to the state house to push an ALEC pro-business agenda or legislation.

14.  I want every code/policy in every state legislature that deems ALEC as a charitable organization to be revoked.

15.  I want every code/policy in every state that deems ALEC meetings as "caucuses", and therefore closed to the public, revoked.

Here's code/policy from South Carolina - they are not the only ones - ALEC has had almost every damn state write up something like this - making ALEC a special case in every state - getting their way!

SECTION   8.   Section 2-17-90(A)(1) of the 1976 Code is amended to read:

"(1)   as to members of the General Assembly, a function to which a member of the General Assembly is invited if the entire membership of the House, the Senate, or the General Assembly is invited, or one of the committees, subcommittees, joint committees, legislative caucuses or their committees or subcommittees, or county legislative delegations of the General Assembly of which the legislator is a member is invited. However, the Speaker of the House and Speaker Pro Tempore of the House may be included in an invitation to one of the above groups. In addition, invitations may be extended and accepted when the invitation is extended to all members in attendance at (a) national and regional conventions and conferences of organizations for which the General Assembly pays annual dues as a membership requirement and (b) American Legislative Exchange Council conventions and conferences;"

16.  I want Iowa to QUIT automatically registering their legislators as members of ALEC.  The legislators should have to opt in - not opt out of ALEC membership.

17.  I want ALL states to publicize in the general media whenever ALEC is in town for any reason - a membership drive, a training session, or to testify before the legislure or state supreme court.

18.  I want ALEC to own up to the fact that everything they do is secretive - they hide their membership, they hide their calendar, they hide their legislation, they hide their publications and they are secretive and they should admit it.

I could go on forever and ever and ever - but I think you get the point.
I'll try to do my part - will you?????????????

ALEC members and those affiliated with ALEC in any manner
MUST NOT BE RE-ELECTED or receive our support in any means or manner!

Without state and federal legislators ALEC will cease to exist and it will implode.
