New LIES Surround NRA/ALEC Kill at Will Bill

The ALEC ethos of lies and misleading statements is at work again - this time in Florida.

They must chant something like this as the ALEC pledge of allegiance:
Remember to word it carefully - so that the press picks it up as a statement of truth - when in fact it is a misleading statement of half truth.

Or this:
If you can’t lie with a straight face – find someone who can lie and make misleading statements for you.

During a Tuesday meeting of Florida’s Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection, state senator David Simmons told the task force and a public audience that the American Legislative Exchange Council had “absolutely nothing” to do with the drafting of the now controversial Florida “stand your ground” self-defense law.

“I want to state to all of you first, that ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, had nothing to do with the drafting of this bill. Absolutely nothing,” Simmons said.

“As a matter of fact, that puts the cart before the horse because ALEC didn’t even become involved in this until Florida passed the law. So there was no ALEC in the drafting of this.”

“Second,” Simmons added, “it wasn’t drafted by the NRA either.”

But then - we still don't know who all the ALEC members are!!!!

The NRA and its lobbyist Marion Hammer helped draft the "stand your ground" law and first pushed it in Florida. Florida Senator Durell Peaden, an ALEC member, introduced the law in his state and it passed in early 2005 as the NRA's Hammer reportedly "stared down legislators as they voted."

"The NRA participated in drafting the Castle Doctrine and supporting it through the process," Marion Hammer told Media Matters. Hammer was president of the NRA from 1995 to 1998, remains a member of its board, and is a longtime Florida lobbyist for the group.

"Most legislation is written by lobbyists, legislators and bill-drafters," Hammer said. "In most cases, legislation comes about as a result of some action that causes legislators to believe that there is a need for remedial legislation. NRA did help draft the Castle Doctrine Law and [former Florida state]Senator [Durell] Peaden was the one that came to us and said we have a bad situation here and we need to do something about it."

This is very subtle disingenuous statement!

A statement meant to mislead the press.

Remember - ALEC itself doesn't "draft" legislation.

ALEC brings in Corporate lobbyists en masse to ALEC meetings with the lobbyists pre-written legislation in their little lobbyist briefcases - ready to give to ALEC legislators - as documented in the all the task force notes and minutes found on the Common Cause webpage.

Even if ALEC didn't facilitate the "drafting" of the kill at will bill - they were a good little pusher/peddler/dealer of extreme 2nd amendment legislation for their ALEC Profit Sector Members - the NRA and WalMart

As noted by  ALEC employee and Maryland House Delegate Michael Hough in an interview:

HOUGH: We are a very pro-Second Amendment organization. In fact, last session, I'll get off-topic here real quick, but some of the things that we were pushing in states was the Castle Doctrine. We worked with the NRA on that, that's one of our model bills that we have states introduce.
